Art Print - Murray Sayle & Ron Toombs Hume Weir 1974

Copyright Robin Lewis printed on 250gsm Kodak paper

In 1973 Murray Sayle came up against Yamaha-mounted Gregg Hansford in the 350 class, managing to hold sway at his home tracks, setting lap records at Amaroo Park. Crucially, he faced off against Ron Toombs at Oran Park in an A-grade race, and the man known as the ‘Maestro’ came off second best. “I took a defensive line and he locked up his brake in the last corner, but he never held that against me. Ron use to give me advice and he was a great competitor.”

On the recommendation of Toombs to Team Kawasaki Australia manager Neville Doyle, Sayle was offered some guest rides on the team’s spare Kawasaki 750 triple, and made a full-time member in 1975.

Photographer Lewis says Sayle and Toombs surprised the huge Hume Weir crowd with a nimble display in this early appearance of the big Green Meanies, thought by many to be unsuited to the tight track where the 350s reigned.
